Downspouts

Downspouts That Actually Move Water Away From Your Home

A gutter system is only as good as its downspouts. Strong Gutters installs properly sized, correctly placed downspouts across Southeast Louisiana — so water drains fast and stays away from your foundation.

The Last Line of Defense for Your Foundation

Downspouts are the vertical pipes that carry water from your gutters down to the ground and away from your home. Without enough of them — or with ones that are undersized or poorly placed — water backs up in your gutters, overflows, and pools against your foundation. In Louisiana's heavy rain season, that's a serious problem.

Styles

Downspout Styles We Install

Rectangular (2×3 & 3×4)

The most common residential downspout profile. Rectangular downspouts are clean, low-profile, and pair naturally with K-style gutters. We install 2×3 for standard runs and 3×4 for high-volume or long runs.

Round (3" & 4")

Round downspouts complement half-round gutters and add a classic look to traditional or historic homes. Available in 3-inch and 4-inch diameters to match your drainage needs.

Corrugated Flex Pipe

Used for underground drainage extensions, corrugated flex pipe connects to your downspout at grade and carries water to a pop-up emitter or drain field away from your foundation.

Decorative Downspouts

For copper gutter systems or high-end homes, we offer round copper and ornamental downspouts that age beautifully and become a design feature of the exterior.

Sizing

Getting the Size Right

Undersized downspouts are one of the most common causes of gutter overflow. The right size depends on your roof's square footage, pitch, and local rainfall intensity.

2×3"
Standard Residential

Handles up to 600 sq ft of roof area. Suitable for most single-story homes with shorter gutter runs.

3×4"
High Volume

Handles up to 1,200 sq ft of roof area. Recommended for two-story homes, long gutter runs, and Louisiana's heavy rainfall.

4" Round
Half-Round Systems

Standard pairing for half-round gutters. Provides excellent flow capacity and a proportional look.

Drainage

Downspout Extensions & Drainage

Splash Blocks

Concrete or plastic blocks placed at the downspout outlet to direct water away from the foundation and prevent soil erosion.

Roll-Out Extensions

Flexible extensions that unroll when water flows and retract when dry — keeping the outlet away from the foundation without a permanent pipe on the ground.

Underground Drainage

Corrugated pipe buried underground carries water from the downspout to a pop-up emitter in the yard — the cleanest solution for foundation protection.

Rain Barrels

Connect your downspout to a rain barrel to collect water for irrigation. We can install diverter kits that route overflow back to the ground when the barrel is full.

Benefits

Why Proper Downspouts Matter

Foundation Protection

Water pooling against your foundation is the leading cause of basement flooding, slab cracks, and costly structural repairs. Properly placed downspouts keep water moving away.

Prevent Gutter Overflow

Too few downspouts — or undersized ones — cause water to back up and overflow mid-gutter, defeating the entire system and soaking your fascia and siding.

Landscape Preservation

Concentrated water discharge erodes soil, kills plants, and creates muddy trenches. Extensions and proper placement spread the load and protect your yard.

Mosquito Control

Standing water in clogged or overflowing gutters breeds mosquitoes. Fast-draining downspouts keep your system clear and your yard dry.

Siding & Paint Protection

Overflowing gutters run water down your siding, causing paint failure, wood rot, and mold. Adequate downspout capacity keeps water in the system.

Curb Appeal

Properly sized, color-matched downspouts look intentional and clean. Mismatched or sagging downspouts are one of the first things people notice on a home.

How Many Do You Need?

Industry standard is one downspout per 20–30 linear feet of gutter, but Louisiana's rainfall intensity often calls for more. We assess your roof area, gutter pitch, and drainage conditions to recommend the right number and placement — never a one-size-fits-all answer.
